How to Manually Calculate PPI

Various approaches can be employed to calculate PPI. The method that is most commonly employed involves calculating the pixels per inch from the diagonal screen size (in centimeters or inches) and the number of pixels along the horizontal and vertical edges of the display.

Step one: Calculate the number of pixels that appear on the diagonal using the following formula:

dp = โˆš(w2 + h2)

Where w is the number of pixels that appear along the horizontal edge, and h is the number of pixels that appear along the vertical edge.

You can then use the output of this calculation to determine the PPI as the ratio between the number of pixels that appear along the diagonal screen size as follows:

PPI = dp / di

Where di is the diagonal screen size in inches.

Example Calculation of Pixels per Inch (PPI) & Dot Pitch (DPI)

Let's apply the formula outlined above to determine the PPI of a desktop computer screen.

First, measure the diagonal size of the computer display. For this calculation, we'll say it is 10 inches.

Record the vertical and horizontal pixel count. For this calculation, we'll say they are 600 and 800 pixels respectively.

We can now compute the number of pixels along the diagonal as follows:

dp = โˆš(w2 + h2) = โˆš(8002 + 6002) = โˆš1,000,000 = 1000

We can use this output of this calculation to compute the PPI as follows:

PPI = dp / di = 1000 / 10 = 100.

As such, the desktop computer screen has 100 pixels per 1-inch line on the display.

We can go one step further to calculate the dot pitch as the reciprocal of the PPI:

dot pitch = 1 / 100 in = 0.01 in = 0.254 mm

what is PPI (Pixels Per Inch) Calculator

A Pixels Per Inch (PPI) calculator is a tool used to calculate the pixel density or resolution of a digital display. PPI refers to the number of pixels that are present per inch on a screen. This measurement determines how sharp and detailed the displayed images or text will appear on a particular device.

To use a PPI calculator, you need the following information:

  1. Screen width in pixels: The total number of pixels horizontally across the display.
  2. Screen height in pixels: The total number of pixels vertically from top to bottom.

Once you have this information, follow these steps to calculate the PPI:

  1. Open a web browser: Launch your preferred web browser on your computer or device.

  2. Search for a PPI calculator: Use a search engine to find an online PPI calculator tool or website. You can search for terms like 'PPI calculator' or 'pixels per inch calculator.'

  3. Choose a PPI calculator website: Select a reliable and user-friendly PPI calculator website from the search results.

  4. Enter the screen width and height: On the PPI calculator website, enter the screen width and height values in pixels into the corresponding input fields.

  5. Calculate the PPI: Once you have entered the screen dimensions, click on the 'Calculate' or 'Calculate PPI' button on the website. The PPI calculator will determine the pixel density and display the result.

  6. Interpret the result: The PPI calculator will provide you with the calculated Pixels Per Inch value. This value indicates how many pixels are present in one inch on the display. Higher PPI values generally indicate sharper and more detailed images, while lower PPI values may result in less crisp visuals.

You can use the PPI calculator to compare the pixel densities of different displays or devices and understand their potential image quality and sharpness. Remember that PPI is just one factor influencing display quality, and other factors such as display technology, color accuracy, and viewing distance also play important roles in the overall visual experience.
