Your generosity is the reason we have been able to impact more than 10,000 students annually by awarding nearly 100 grants to the region’s best youth-focused nonprofits. We are truly grateful you have joined us in our mission to impact the lives of Monterey County youth by making learning more accessible to everyone. For almost 50 years, the Foundation has provided funding to programs that cater to youth literacy, early learning, sports, the arts, and more. As we reflected on how we could make the strongest impact on this generation, we sat down with today’s leading educators to respond to their needs. We learned that our youth need a return to normalcy. Lost educational opportunities, worsening mental health and access to childcare have taken their toll and are barriers to success; however, optimism remains. Our community partners are grateful that we are in this together and committed to supporting solutions that will benefit our youth for years to come. We hope you find our annual report informative, compelling, and inspiring; there is much to be proud of in our collective efforts. We appreciate your belief in our work. 2 Our Purpose Our Vision Education changes lives. For the past four decades we have been committed to funding quality educational programs and awarding scholarships and financial aid to benefit Monterey County students from pre-kindergarten to postgraduate levels. These awards create a brighter future for our youth and our community. Our Mission To provide quality educational opportunities for Monterey County youth. We seek to provide every child in Monterey County with the means, opportunities, and experiences to grow and thrive on their journey to adulthood. We’ve learned that fostering the energy and determination of these young people requires tools, guidance and unique experiences. Each journey is different, but we know that every child who is prepared for school is likely to succeed both in and out of the classroom, complete a post-high school credential, and enter a promising career. Their inspiration comes from many sources, each as valuable as the next. Through trusted research and listening sessions with key education leaders around our community, we have defined six milestones to guide the success of our children. These milestones are at the forefront of our grant making. Youth who reach these milestones build a lifelong foundation of self-confidence and accomplishment. We are committed to providing solutions for our young people so, together, we can celebrate their achievements each step of the way. Pebble Beach Golf Links hosted its first ever U.S. Women’s Open with a record amount of dollars raised for charity through some unique special events leading up to the Championship. Our annual fundraising events, including the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance and Hickory Sticks, enjoyed great success thanks to our loyal and generous donors. In the fall of 2023, we joined with Pebble Beach Company to relaunch the premier culinary festival in the country, Pebble Beach Food and Wine. In direct response to the gracious and generous support of our donors and participants in our special events, the Foundation was able to grant a record $3.1M, including a landmark $1.5M to Girls Golf. As always, donors to the Foundation can be confident knowing we are a volunteer-run foundation, with no paid staff. Our entire Board of Directors contributes alongside our donors. These facts help us achieve a Four-Star rating from Charity Navigator and a Platinum Candid seal from GuideStar. Monterey County Preschool Service Corps Supporting kindergarten readiness In Monterey County, only 25% of children entering kindergarten have age appropriate levels of language and literacy readiness. In 2019, Monterey County Preschool Service Corps (PSC) was launched to address the need for quality early childhood education in our community. Their mission is to support kindergarten readiness by offering individualized tutoring for low-income preschool children to develop language and literacy skills during their regular preschool day. Trained AmeriCorps tutors are placed in the classrooms, offering personalized activities. Tutors collaborate with classroom teachers and the children’s families to create intentional activity plans based on the student’s interests, while keeping the focus on language and literacy development. Last year, the program provided tutoring to three hundred preschool students, partnering with twenty preschool programs in Castroville, Gonzales, Greenfield, King City, Monterey, Salinas, and Seaside. “I see excellent progress in my son since Teacher Cynthia started working with him through the PSC program. He is getting one-on-one tutoring every day, and I feel confident of my son going into kindergarten.” — A PSC Parent An added benefit is PSC creates a workforce pipeline of future educators, as many of the tutors go on to work as preschool through 12th grade teachers — addressing the dire need for teachers in our community. Lyceum of Monterey County Acing History Day History Day is a year-long project launched by the Lyceum of Monterey County. The goal of the program is to spark critical thinking, while developing skills in research and analysis, writing, and public speaking. Students explore libraries, archives, and museums, bringing the pages of history books to life. They then share their projects in competitions that escalate from local to state to nationwide levels. When a seventh grader who loves golf was inspired to explore the history of the TaylorMade driver, he never could have dreamed that he would be presenting his findings to the company’s CEO. Or that TaylorMade would be presenting him with custom wedges. For Christopher, a seventh grader at All Saints Day School in Carmel Valley, word of his project titled, “At the Frontier of Golf: The TaylorMade Driver,” made its way to TaylorMade CEO David Abeles at the 2023 TaylorMade Pebble Beach Invitational. So Abeles invited Christopher as a VIP guest to the event and gave a personal tour of the PGA TOUR equipment truck where drivers are dialed in for the pros on a weekly basis. Abeles then listened as Christopher shared his presentation, before sharing with Christopher that TaylorMade also had something to share — a pair of custom wedges. Museum Foundation of Pacific Grove Naturalists in Training Pacific Grove’s Museum of Natural History opened in 1883 and is one of the oldest natural history museums in the U.S. The collection has a deep diversity of the Central Coast’s flora, fauna, and historical artifacts and stories. The Museum Foundation of Pacific Grove was created to advance the Museum’s mission to inspire discovery, wonder, and stewardship of our natural world. The Naturalists in Training internship is a year-long program for high school students, who are trained in natural history, conservation, and science education. Using their new knowledge and skills, they mentor younger museum visitors, earning volunteer credits and a stipend. The interns help plan and lead science activities, art projects, games, and more for one week of camp. The interns and campers learn about their place in a rapidly changing world and how they can make a difference. A recent intern was accepted at a dozen of the top universities across the country. She sent a note of appreciation to the Museum Foundation: “I could not have achieved any of this without you! What I learned at the PG Museum has heavily influenced what I want to do in the future. I am really interested in climate technology and how policy, business, and social systems converge as we work to mitigate the climate crisis and other environmental issues. I am still contemplating where to go next fall, but I do plan on majoring in either environmental engineering, biology, or another STEM major, and possibly dive into economics, data science, or policy as well.” The Equine Healing Collaborative Changing the way people heal Young people are experiencing unprecedented stress levels in these challenging times. Limited access to standard mental health services is an obstacle and many must wait a long time for an appointment, or cannot afford help. Through our grant, The Equine Healing Collaborative (EHC) is bridging the gap by providing low to nocost sessions for young people in need who lack insurance or sufficient funds. EHC provides Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) with licensed marriage and family therapists and social workers, specifically trained in EAP, using rescued horses and donkeys. Youth referred to the program may be experiencing a variety of mental health conditions including depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder and, in some instances, suicidal ideation. Access to EAP can mitigate these symptoms. EHC received a call from a Spanish-speaking mother who was trying to find help for her daughter, who was also on the call to interpret. The family was asked if they had health insurance. They didn’t. Could they afford to pay anything on EHC’s generous sliding scale? They couldn’t. The young girl seemed to be getting worried. When she was told a grant was available that would pay for her treatment, three times she repeated: “For free?” When EHC confirmed it, she started sobbing. She had been trying to get help for months. 2023 Bright Spots 2023 Annual Report 7
Scholarship Academy 8 The Scholarship Academy is the signature program of Pebble Beach Company Foundation. Providing broad-based educational assistance through scholarships and financial aid, the Academy focuses on two areas: Community Scholarships for Monterey County youth organizations and Company Scholarships for the children of Pebble Beach Company employees. After graduating from UC Davis with a degree in Psychology in 2020, Maritza is finishing her final semester in Cal State Monterey Bay’s Master of Social Work Program, with the goal of becoming a school counselor. Inspired by her immigrant parents, Maritza is a proud first-generation college graduate. The Seaside High alum is excited to work with students and is thankful for the guidance counselors gave her throughout her educational journey. Maritza values forming and maintaining quality relationships, as well as establishing a healthy work/life balance. Maritza Pebble Beach Company Scholar UC Davis - Psychology California State University, Monterey Bay Master of Social Work As a first-generation college student, Brandon began his educational journey at Hartnell College to pursue an associate’s degree in kinesiology and to continue competing in Cross Country and Track & Field. Through over 500 hours of community service, including tutoring first graders, Brandon discovered that he enjoys helping others. His career goal is to become either a physical education teacher, athletic trainer, or physical therapist’s assistant for a school in Salinas, where he was raised. Brandon hopes that in pursuing one of these careers, he can create awareness of the importance of a healthy and active lifestyle. Scholarship Academy 2023 Annual Report 9 A recipient of Cal State Monterey Bay’s Outstanding Future Alumni Award, Elijah has been a valued leader in the school’s Pay It Forward Scholarship & Mentoring Program. “Pay It Forward pushed me to do better” says Elijah. “It focuses on academic excellence and I would not have been involved in the other programs here on campus without the support and encouragement of the program. My mentor offered me a lot of advice and helped me make good choices.” Elijah was also an active member of the AgriBusiness Club and a frequent volunteer at First Tee — Monterey County. He is excited to start his career at Taylor Farms as a supervisor. Elijah Community Scholar: Pay It Forward California State University, Monterey Bay BS in Business Administration Concentration in AgriBusiness Julia earned the opportunity to experience a unique summer at Wake Forest University, participating in their Sports Medicine Institute. Immersed in the leading sports medicine program, she participated in fascinating lectures, hands-on training with renowned orthopedic surgeons, and even a surgical skills challenge in a mock operating room. The experience reaffirmed Julia’s desire to pursue a degree in sports or emergency medicine. In the meantime, Julia tends to her family’s small farm in Jamesburg — a rural region of Carmel Valley that is an hour commute from Carmel High. Every morning, Julia and her younger sister wake before sunrise to care for their livestock. And at the end of her long commute from high school, Julia is there every evening to care for her animals. Through our decades of experience, we have seen the positive impact scholarships have on students from pre-kindergarten to postgraduate levels.
Signature Events 10 The Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance has been a proud partner to Pebble Beach Company Foundation for nearly five decades, and I want to offer a special word of thanks to everyone who has made this partnership a success. From its beginning in 1950, amidst celebrating great cars, the Pebble Beach Concours sought to raise funds to help people in need. Initially it did that by partnering with volunteer organizations to oversee program and poster sales, which then earned a portion of the proceeds. As the Concours grew and its charitable efforts expanded, it sought to partner with a 501(c)(3) that could accept and better distribute charitable donations. Pebble Beach Company Foundation came into being in 1975 — and with the help of our entrants, judges, volunteers, and sponsors, the Concours continues to be a significant source of funding. Ours is an active and thoughtful partnership that benefits both the local community and the car world while truly helping people in need. This past year we were instrumental in helping Pebble Beach Company Foundation vet and fund a new program at Rancho Cielo teaching at-risk teens how to repair and restore collector cars. Contributions were made in memory of Don Williams, a leading automotive legend who participated in the Concours for over 50 years, sharing more cars than anyone else in his lifetime. Meet Donor Chris Bock: A life of cars, kids, and community service Chris Bock has two seemingly divergent passions — celebrating great cars and helping kids in need — but they come together at unexpected times and places, most notably with the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance and Pebble Beach Company Foundation. Chris fell hard for cars when he was a crossing guard in grade school in the early 1950s. A 1941 Packard 180 Super Eight Sedan pulled to the front of a house nearby and Chris watched as the driver adjusted all the windows — electrically. It was a magic moment. “It was the first time I realized cars could be more than transportation,” says Chris. When he could drive, he purchased a Packard of his own (a 1947 sedan for $65), traded up for a convertible, then bought a “classic” 1931 Packard Custom Eight Touring Sedan. He also joined the Packard Club and the Classic Car Club of America and went on tour for the first time in the fall of 1962, at age 17. Along the way, he heard about the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance and became determined to see it for himself. Because it was pouring rain, and had been for days, the 1963 Pebble Beach Concours was held beside the stables, but it still impressed Chris: “It was like finding the holy grail, a field full of many of the most important and sought after cars of all time.” Chris moved from his hometown of Berkeley to the Monterey Peninsula in 1969, working initially with Union Oil and then becoming a real estate broker. A decade later, wanting to start a family, he adopted a child through the Children’s Home Society, then learned the local office would be closing. He was among a group of people who fought to save it — and when those efforts failed, they created a new Children’s Services Center (later renamed Kinship Center, and now Seneca). “It was needed,” says Chris simply. A founding board member, he was active in the organization for decades as it expanded from its initial focus on adoptions to providing foster care and a wide range of services and advocacy for children in need as well as their families. Along the way, Chris began to foster some of the more hard-to-place children, and that continued even after he moved away. His fosters now number more than 100, many of whom remain in his life today. Over the years, Chris continued to attend the Pebble Beach Concours, and there too his attendance turned to service. He was tapped to be a judge in 1973, a Chief Class Judge in 1983, and moved into the role of Chief Judge in 2013. He has served on the Car Selection Committee since its founding, and he plays a key role in field and ramp operations, moving cars quickly to the awards stage if they are prone to overheating or slowing the pace when needed. He also serves as wise consultant (and quiet sounding board) to Chairman Sandra Button, her staff and numerous judges, entrants, and restorers — and his advice can be sage: back in the early 1980s, it was Chris who first floated the idea of gathering all six Bugatti Royales at Pebble Beach. “Being part of the Pebble Beach Concours, watching it grow, bringing cars and enthusiasts together from all over the globe, has been a dream come true.” Over the years, Chris has consistently made donations to the Foundation in remembrance of key car enthusiasts. These contributions have helped support entities near to his heart such as Seneca Central Coast and Rancho Cielo that provide education and advocacy for children, including programs to help students learn auto repair and restoration skills. Through his charitable giving, Chris has brought his two passions together: saving great kids and saving great cars. U.S. Women’s Open at Pebble Beach Celebrating the past, showcasing the present, and inspiring the future Last July, Pebble Beach was honored to host its first ever U.S. Women’s Open (USWO), in which 156 of the world’s best female golfers competed for their game’s most coveted prize and the largest purse to date in women’s golf. Hawaii’s Allisen Corpuz surged to victory in the final round, earning her spot on the Wall of Champions behind the 1st tee at Pebble Beach Golf Links next to Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson, Tiger Woods, and Viktor Hovland, among other greats of the game. The inspirational stories extended far beyond the competition: nearly all past champions of the USWO assembled for a very rare reunion; an all-female crew led a U.S. Navy flyover to kick-off the July 4th celebration; a team of 35 female groundskeepers flew in from around the country to assist in course preparation; and accomplished junior girls joined past USWO champions and executives from ten leading companies at “All In at The Hay.” This was more than just a fun celebration of women’s golf; as the charitable partner for “All In at The Hay” and the “Friends of Pebble Beach” event, Pebble Beach Company Foundation raised $1.5 million for LPGA*USGA Girls Golf (Girls Golf), the largest single contribution ever received by the organization. Girls Golf is the only junior golf program for girls ages 6–17 that specializes in providing girl-friendly environments to learn the game of golf. While making golf fun and teaching more than just stance and swing, the program also teaches girls valuable life skills like confidence and perseverance. Girls Golf raises funds to reduce financial barriers for junior golf participation, including bringing new golf sites to communities with limited access, providing scholarships, enhancing curriculum, refreshing golf supplies, and providing resources to girls with financial needs. One of Girls Golf’s first commitments of these funds was to support the Girls Golf Program at the Monterey Chapter of the First Tee in Salinas, California. Pebble Beach Company shared a vision with the USGA that hosting the USWO at Pebble Beach Golf Links would shine a spotlight on the women’s game at all levels. The 2023 USWO showcased the best female golfers in the world competing for the most coveted trophy in the women’s game at Pebble Beach Golf Links, and as a result inspired female golfers of all ages. Signature Events 2023 Annual Report 13 Pebble Beach Food & Wine Back and better than ever After a five-year hiatus, Pebble Beach Food and Wine has returned. The festival, which took place in April 2024, had many of the same hallmarks as past events, including more than 100 of the best chefs and wineries from across the globe. In a key difference from prior events, Pebble Beach Company Foundation acted as the host organization, with proceeds benefiting our mission. Other charitable partners included the James Beard Foundation and The Roots Fund. The Foundation, in partnership with Pebble Beach Company, used the relaunch as an opportunity to leverage the successes of the past, with improvements to make the Food and Wine even better. Renowned chefs Andrew Zimmern, Stephanie Izard, Jeremiah Tower, and Michael Mina joined many others to contribute to the world-class epicurean experiences. In addition, an expanded open-air pavilion centered around a live 30,000-pound cypress tree gave attendees a true sense of place for the Saturday and Sunday Grand Tasting events. The Foundation Table Amid the relaunch of Pebble Beach Food and Wine, another tradition was born. On Friday of the event weekend, the Foundation hosted its first annual Foundation Table Dinner. Driven by the underlying concept that our community is one big family, the Foundation Table was an opportunity to come together and enjoy world-class cuisine for a great cause. The Foundation teamed up with four-time James Beard Award-winning TV personality, chef, writer, and social justice advocate Andrew Zimmern to lead students from Rancho Cielo’s Culinary Academy, where young people facing challenges are equipped for success through diploma education, vocational training, counseling, and life skills development, in a safe and affirming environment. Sommeliers from The Roots Fund, an organization dedicated to empowering Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) in the wine industry, poured wines donated by Fine and Rare, and Donum Estate. This memorable and inspiring evening, while celebrating culinary excellence, was all in support of the youth of Monterey County. The Foundation Table is now an instant classic — not to be missed!
